Winner of CTM’s 2012 Ugly Sweater Contest Longtime legal assistant LaRae Shotswell eked out a narrow victory in the firm’s first Ugliest Christmas Sweater contest. Receptionist Theresa Hall was a close second. Shotswell’s entry, accessorized with a treetop angel on her head and a stuffed bird on her shoulder, resembled a Christmas tree. Hall, who also decorated her own entry, wore a vest festooned with lights and a stuffed Santa. The top two entrants both won gift cards to Outback Restaurant. Happy holidays from all of us at CTM. CTM Sponsors Boys & Girls Club of Thurston County’s Annual Fundraiser CTM was a table sponsor for the Boys & Girls Club of Thurston County’s (BGCTC) annual “Born To Be Wild” auction held on Friday, October 26, 2012. CTM’s sponsorship helped underwrite the cost of the event so that every dollar raised went to the support of the BGCTC’s programs. The BGCTC is a youth development agency serving more than 2,300 school-aged children in Thurston County, with after-school programs that promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. For a number of years now Senior Services of South Sound has sold deep fried coconut covered shrimp at the event to raise money for its programs. The shrimp was fantastic and the effort a success! CTM Attorneys Attend Domestic Violence Training On October 1, 2012, CTM attorneys Nate Korokrax, Lenny Lucenko, Chuck Szurszewski and Chris Meserve attended a full-day conference presented by Thurston County Superior Court. The program, “Enhancing a Coordinated Response to Domestic Violence” was geared toward attorneys, law enforcement and court staff who present and hear cases in which domestic violence is a factor. The court received a grant from the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges to bring speakers from the Battered Women’s Justice Project in Minneapolis, the Center for Court Innovation in New York, La Crosse County Circuit Court in Wisconsin and the University of Washington. Carter Hick settles negligence case against DSHS for 2.85 million After many years of hard fought litigation that saw the parties in state court, federal court, at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, and back down to state court, DSHS finally admitted that it failed Carter’s client. Unfortunately, the settlement will never undo the years of physical and sexual abuse the client endured as a result of DSHS’ negligence. Fortunately, Carter’s client can now get the treatment she needs in order to move forward in a good and healthy way. The PRA lawsuit was brought against Washington’s Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) after it became clear that DSHS was in flagrant violation of Washington’s PRA.
